The\u00a0Emerald Buddha\u00a0dates back to the\u00a014th century. Measuring\u00a045 cm\u00a0in height, the Emerald Buddha is carved from a\u00a0single piece of Jade.\u00a0 The robes on the Buddha are changed every season by\u00a0HM The King of Thailand, and these rituals are some of the most important in the\u00a0Buddhist calendar.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\"emerald-buddha\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Grand Palace\u00a0was built in\u00a01782\u00a0and served as the official residence of the Kings of Thailand from the 18th to 20th century.\u00a0 The present King of Thailand;\u00a0King Rama IX, does not reside there but chooses to live at the\u00a0Chitralada Palace.<\/p>\n

The complex is\u00a0open daily\u00a0from\u00a08.30 a.m.\u00a0to\u00a03.30 p.m. except\u00a0on special days designated for royal ceremonies or state functions.\u00a0 The\u00a0admission fee\u00a0is\u00a0300 baht\u00a0which includes entry to\u00a0Vimanmek Mansion\u00a0and the\u00a0Coin Pavilion.\u00a0 Tel:\u00a002-623-5500<\/p>\n

There is much more of interest to be seen in the Grand Palace compound, such as the\u00a0Royal Thai Decorations\u00a0and\u00a0Coin Pavilion, where a permanent exhibition of\u00a0royal regalia,\u00a0decorations,\u00a0medals\u00a0and\u00a0coins\u00a0dating back to the early 11th century is on display.<\/p>\n

\"Wat<\/a><\/p>\n

Visitors are\u00a0advised\u00a0that\u00a0polite and modest dress is essential.\u00a0Trousers\u00a0and\u00a0t-shirts with sleeves\u00a0are advised for\u00a0both men and women.\u00a0Women\u00a0should be careful\u00a0not to wear\u00a0see-through clothes or bare their shoulders.\u00a0 If you chose to\u00a0wear sandals, you\u00a0must\u00a0also\u00a0wear socks,\u00a0no bare feet. If you turn up\u00a0improperly dressed\u00a0you\u00a0can rent\u00a0appropriate clothing at the entrance booth.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/a><\/p>\n

Careful\u00a0of touts working outside the palace area, they may tell you the Palace is closed for a Buddhist holiday or ceremony. On the odd occasion they maybe correct, but its more likely that they are trying to convince you not to enter the Palace compound and take their own organized tour instead.<\/p>\n

Within the\u00a0Palace grounds\u00a0you will find\u00a0free guided tours\u00a0in\u00a0English\u00a0available at\u00a010:00,\u00a010:30,\u00a01:30\u00a0and\u00a02:00. You can alsorent an audio guide\u00a0for 100 Baht (2.83 USD) plus a deposit to secure return.<\/p>\n

While the\u00a0Temple of the Emerald Buddha\u00a0and\u00a0Grand Palace grounds\u00a0are open every day (with the exception of state functions),\u00a0audience halls\u00a0in the\u00a0Grand Palace\u00a0are\u00a0closed on weekends. This means you can only gain entrance to see themagnificent thrones\u00a0on\u00a0weekdays.\u00a0 The\u00a0Royal Pantheon\u00a0in\u00a0Temple of the Emerald Buddha\u00a0is\u00a0only open one day a year, on\u00a06 April.<\/p>\n

\"the-grand-palace-wat-phra-kaew-bangkok\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Grand Palace\u00a0is located on\u00a0Na Phra Lan Road,\u00a0Old City\u00a0(Rattanakosin).\u00a0 There are many ways to get to the\u00a0Grand Palaceand\u00a0Wat Phra Kaeo.<\/p>\n

Standard buses\u00a0(red, white\/blue)\u00a044, 47\u00a0and\u00a091\u00a0stop on\u00a0Thaiwang road\u00a0between\u00a0Wat Pho\u00a0and\u00a0Wat Phra Kaew, and\u00a0buses 1, 25, 44, 47, 82\u00a0and\u00a091\u00a0stop on\u00a0Maharat road, on the\u00a0west of Wat Phra Kaew.<\/p>\n

You can also take the\u00a0Chaophraya Express Boat\u00a0to the\u00a0Chang Pier\u00a0(Tha Chang). You must then walk through the market around the pier and out into the square surrounded by old shophouses. From there you will see the\u00a0large white-wash walls\u00a0of the\u00a0Palace compound.<\/p>\n

If you’re staying in\u00a0Khao San Rd, or the\u00a0Banglamphu area, it’s possible to\u00a0walk there via Sanam Luang, the large park across the main intersection at the west end of\u00a0Ratchadamneon road.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, you always have the option of taking a taxi.<\/p>\n
