As more and more visa restrictions were issued, many expats and regular visitors were left wondering if they were really welcome in 'the land of the smiles' - a country that relies heavily on tourism.
But now with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva personally spearheading the campaign, Thailand maybe starting to open it's arms to foreigners once again.

Part of the efforts to raise the countries profile include cutting air fairs and hotel prices; waiving fees for national parks and increasing exposure on the countries little known tourist attractions. The waiving of tourist visa fees is the second move this month to suggest the lightening of visa restrictions, on 3rd February the Thai Cabinet approved a visa exemption scheme for passengers transiting through Suvarnabhumi International Airport. The waiver allows transit passengers to temporarily leave the airport premises on a short visit or to shop at places near the airport without a visa. TAT say it's expecting 14 million visitor arrivals this year which the company hope will generate 505 billion baht ($14.46 billion) in revenue. While some believe the efforts may not attract the extra tourists as projected, free tourist visas for all is certainly a step in the right direction. |
