Songkran Alcohol Ban Rejected By Sanan Panel |

Plans to ban the sale of alcohol during Thailand's Songkran festival have been rejected. The National Committee for Alcohol Consumption Control announced on Monday that the proposed ban from April 13th to the 15th, would only harm tourism and should not take place. Instead, the Committee decided an intensive campaign against drink-driving would be more effective and less harmful to the economy. Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart, who chaired the committee, said a ban on alcohol sales during Songkran would further harm the tourism industry. |

Bangkok Lights Out For Earth Hour |

The widespread shimmer of Bangkok's lights will be turned off on the night of March 28th, as part of the Earth Hour campaign to raise the awareness of global warming and the need to save the planets resources. Bangkok will join 680 other cites, more than twice the number that participated in 2008, in the worldwide effort to save energy. |

Miss Thailand Universe 2009 will be held at the Sofitel Centara Grand Bangkok (Phahonyothin Rd near Central Lad Prao), on Saturday March 28th. The 44 beautiful contestants from all over the country, were selected from a total of 392 candidates. The winner and runners up will go on to compete in the the Miss Universe, Miss Earth, Miss Intercontinental, Miss Asia Pacific and Miss Tourism Queen International beauty pageants. |

Thailand To Host First Asian Martial Arts Games |

The Thai Cabinet together with the Olympic Council of Asia, made an announcement at the 52nd OCA Executive Board Meeting in Bangkok, that Thailand will host the 1st Asian Martial Arts Games. The competitions, which will take place from the 25th April to the 3rd of May, are the latest games set up by the Olympic Council of Asia and hopes are that they will help promote Thailand’s image as a sports tourism destination to the world. |
